Dragoman's Revenge

  1. DRAGOMAN'S REVENGE - A color pencil drawing on an 11 x 14 size vellum paper.

This drawing is one of 7 interior illustrations I did for a forthcoming book titled, "The Adventures of Dragoman," by Otis Adelbert Kline. It illustrates the story, "Dragoman's Revenge". The book was never published.

Poor Mr. Kline, not only did he imitate the ground-breaking science-fantasy novels of Edgar Rice Burroughs, but he had to suffer Burroughs creating one of the world's most popular fictional characters, "TARZAN OF THE APES"!!! And sure enough, soon after Tarzan came along, Kline came up with "Jan of the Jungle".

When I read these Dragoman stories, I enjoyed them. But now, I wonder, were they also imitations of another writer of Arabian Night's adventure tales that appeared in the 1930s and 1940s pulps? Like those of Talbot Mundy, or Harold Lamb perhaps? But Kline's Dragoman stories are good, so what does it matter.
